Overview - Graduate Temporary Visa

After completing your course, you and your family can stay, work, or study in Australia for up to four years with a graduate temporary visa. At the conclusion of your initial graduate visa, you may be eligible to request for an extension in certain circumstances.

After passing an Australian course, you can remain in the country for a minimum of two years with a graduate visa.

Eligibility

If any of the following applies to you, you may apply for a Graduate visa:

You are located in Australia.

You currently have a Tier 4 (General) student visa, also known as a student visa.

you used your student visa or Tier 4 (General) student visa to study for a minimum amount of time towards an Australian bachelor's degree, postgraduate degree, or other qualified course.

The Home Office has been informed by your educational institution (e.g., your college or university) that you have successfully finished your course.

If you are unsure if your education provider has notified the Home Office that you have successfully finished your course, you can inquire with them.

How Long You Can Stay?

As you know this is a temporary visa you can apply for after graduation. A two-year visa is granted to graduates. It will last for three years if you have a PHD or another doctorate certification.

The day your application is accepted will mark the beginning of your visa.

If you'd like to extend your stay in Australia

Your Graduate visa cannot be extended. But you might be able to change to another type of visa, such as a skilled worker visa.

How to Apply?

When to Apply?

Prior to the expiration of your Tier 4 (General) or graduate temporary visa, you must apply.

Once your college or institution informed the Home Office that you have successfully finished the graduation you were enrolled in with your student or Tier 4 (General) graduate temporary visa, as you are eligible to apply. It is not necessary to wait till after you receive your diploma or graduation degree.

You will be required to certify your identity and submit supporting documentation with your application.

If you require an appointment to do this, your application may take longer. When you begin your application, you'll discover whether you require one.

You will receive a decision regarding your visa within eight weeks after submitting your online application, proving your identity, and providing the necessary paperwork.

After graduation, you are free to remain in Australia while you await a decision.

If your selected course isn't qualified for a student temporary visa, then the only way you can study is with a graduate visa. You can extend your student visa in instead of applying for a new one if your course qualifies for one.
